I've came to the conclusion that I don't like partying all that much. (I do like to dance!) I went through all of freshman year without partying. Where do y'all get the energy? Hah I feel like an old lady already. I would much rather drive somewhere far and just chill on top of a hill. Every time I drive to Davis, I picture myself driving pass the usual exit to Richards Blvd. I don't care where, but I just want to keep going. It can be a weekend trip or a week long trip. I just want to see things. But why is it that we can't afford to do so? So many things and people in our lives to consider. Of course, we have those priorities that keep us straight. Yet sometimes I feel like my priorities are caging me in. I want to rediscover that spontaneity element even if I have to sacrifice a few days of productivity. It will surely do me more good than harm.

We left my house early in the morning when it was still cloudy and wet out. As we drove pass Davis entering Winters, the sun finally began to creep out. The ride to the lake was absolutely beautiful as we drove by farmlands and entered the mountains. The road became extremely winding as we reached the perimeter of the lake. At one point, we saw a random peacock in the middle of road, a buffalo amongst a herd of cows, and possibly a black bear. After visiting the Visitor Center, we were directed to the nearest hike called Smittle Creek. It was quite a disappointment compared to my last adventure up in Bassi Falls. Nonetheless, it's always nice to get away to some place closer to nature.

Every year Tracy would go to San Jose with her family during Christmas and her birthday. This year Manuel planned a surprise party for her a week ahead, and it was quite a success! We were all dressed up in our pretty dresses and dress shirts. First we had dinner at a small Indian restaurant called Tandoori Night. We had the largest group taking over most of the tables and plates and utensils until big families started coming in. Then we went to Dave & Buster in Roseville for the first time for the games. "It's like Chuck E. Cheese's but on steroid," according to Tracy. Our group went too crazy over the Giant claw game. Richard luckily got two of the toys out for Tracy after like the 10th try

The wedding was quite spectacular although the weather was a bummer. My only complaint is my bridesmaid look. I pretty much aged 10 years with the big hairdo and cake face. It was quite special having Y Lan and her family singing the night away. Y Lan definitely inspires me to look that good when I am in my late 50s. Overall, my bridesmaid experience was unforgettable.

Free admission to the California Academy of Sciences today! We stayed for a good two hours or so until they evacuated the whole building due to an emergency. It was perfect timing because we had just finished the Planetarium show, and I was ready to go eat! Annie mentioned to me before about a list of 100 things to try in SF before you die, and we decided to cross one of them out. #5 Chasu Ramen at Katana-Ya. We had the regular ramen with miso soup, and it was delicious on a cold day. Unfortunately, we won't be able to finish most of the things on the list by the end of year, since we just started today. However, I am determined to get a good start on the 2011 list once it's out!

I've been trying to transition into this care-free-stress-free lifestyle back home after a hectic fall quarter, and it's beginning to feel right again. I had a pretty rough start, making all the wrong decisions here and there. I'm just glad I ended the quarter realizing what I want (for now). When winter quarter begins, I will declare managerial economics as my major and also work toward a global & international studies minor. Hopefully, I will have better time management between work and school and have a social life again. I felt like a hermit crab all quarter, sitting in front of my desk. There were days when I went without a single real conversation besides the "Hi, how are you? $4.21 please. Thank you, have a nice day." I was pretty much in autopilot. No more I say! I am changing my life around!

It's cool to have a brother who loves to eat and travel and has a passion for photography. I went with him to the last day of the World Photography Festival at the Left Space Studio. The event wasn't very crowded, and we managed to attend the photojournalism rountable and the Sony artisans series with Brian Smith. Part of me want to jump into the wagon since both my brother and my dad invest in so many high-end film and digital cameras. Why not take advantage of it since I do have the equipments at home? Not to mention, my brother is turning our laundry room into a dark room to develop films. It would be a great skill to know the correct techniques and the use of lighting and such. However, for unknown reasons, I prefer being a complete amateur at it. I just don't want to get technical at all. I simply want to take pictures of the people around me and document my life. That is all. Although I do get very excited when a photo of mine turns out artistic and "professional" by accident. So I left the event with the above quote from Brian Smith.

Before we left San Francisco, we went to Burma Superstar to try Burmese food for the first time. My favorite of the night was the tea leaf salad. We pretty much tried all the suggested dishes from Yelp. I am disappointed to say that Burmese food is not a favorite. Or maybe my appetite is a little off today.

I went to talk with my managerial economics adviser yesterday, and we made a rough academic plan of my remaining two years here at Davis. I think I am underestimating the difficulty of double majoring in managerial economics with international relations. I have yet to take any core classes for both majors, so I cannot judge. However, I am firm on my major choices, so there is no backing out. I need to take my studies more seriously after this quarter. I am done fucking up. I just need to finish my GE's and some prerequisite courses over the summer and take 16 units each quarter, then I should be able to graduate by 2013.

The Nart in me is coming out now.

This was by far the most legit adventure that I had ever experienced. Early in the morning we drove up to Placerville, and we were stoked to arrive in an hour. Little did we know that our destination was much further than that. By that, I mean another two hours or so. From there, we went on a long drive on Ice House Road heading to the El Dorado National Forest. The road was narrow and extremely winding, so we decided to take a break for lunch in the middle of nowhere. As we continued on the road, we stumbled upon a beautiful and quiet lake in the Union Valley Reservior. After we admired the view, we headed up the mountains. At one point we decided to give up on Bassi Falls and settle for a nearby lake. We ended up at Loon Lake, which happened to be the camping spot that Chris and Richard had gone to in the summer. Unfortunately, the ground was already covered in snow by now. My poor Corolla got stuck on the icy slope, and it couldn't reverse any further without the tires burning. We were not prepared for the snow at all. Heck, we didn't even expect to encounter any today. In the back of my trunk, I had four cans of Swanson chicken broth that I was too lazy to carry into my apartment. With nothing else at hand, we used those babies to break the ice! It was the most ridiculous sight. Three silly kids pounding the icy snow with soup cans. Luckily, a truck stopped for us and pulled us out with a rope an hour later. The men even directed us to the right direction to Bassi Falls. After going through so much trouble, we had to see that fall!

Vancy and Tran's Food Adventure part 2.
On most Fridays Vancy and I like to treat ourselves after our classes. This week is Fat Face. This place was tricky to find, nicely hidden in a small alley of some sort on the corner of L and Fifth. I tried their popular Cola-braised pork sandwich, which was tasty but overpriced. $7 for less than a foot long! I made a big mistake of getting the plum, basil, green tea popsicle. I got too excited when I saw green tea that I completely missed the BASIL part. It. Was. Disgusting. I'm sure the other flavors are worth a try (next time).

My biggest disappointment so far is not doing the things that I had in mind before school started. However, I manage to keep myself very busy yet stressed at the same time. Fortunately, work has been good to me. I am quickly learning my way as a cashier in the Silo thanks to my fellow coworkers. Since this is my very first job, I find myself being overly friendly and polite at times. Everyone else just seems so chill here. I guess it just takes time before I can get comfortable. So my life has turned into another routine of school, work, and study. I really do live for the weekends. I make sure my Fridays and Saturdays are eventful, and my Sundays are reserved for more studying. With that, I am content.

I just love being on high elevation. It is a pain to climb, but the view is always rewarding. I need to plan more hiking trips in the future.

I've been itching to get out of Davis and Elk Grove and go somewhere inspiring. What happened these past few days have put me in such a somber mood. I just needed to get away from it all and enjoy a day observing what goes on outside my own little world at home. I just needed to be reminded that things are beautiful again. That everything is fine.

Before heading back to school, I drove down to Santa Cruz to visit Andrew. I still cannot believe I made it there in one piece considering how nervous I was. This was my first road trip anywhere by myself. How crazy! At the end of the trip, I realized how much I enjoy driving long distances by myself with the music blasting. There is something quite liberating about it, and you just feel invincible.

We literally shopped 'til we dropped at the Woodbury Outlet, an hour train ride outside of Manhattan. I had never seen an outlet so packed with people before. It was like the whole town of Elk Grove (and even more) decided to shop at once.

The unlimited daily passes on the subway are great. For under $10, you can ride everywhere until 3AM, you do actually need it until that time. Our only complain is the unbearable heat down there.

On the first day, New York City didn't feel like New York City. Their suburbs look just like ours. I kept thinking we were still in California! We didn't experience the real New York City until we stepped out onto Times Square at 2AM. People everywhere. Taxis everywhere. Yet surprisingly I didn't feel the same excitement that I had before coming here. Now it is time to say goodbye and move onto our next city/country along the east coast.

Let me clarify exactly what I am doing and what I have done in Peru. Earlier this year, I just wanted to travel to a country that is not your typical England/France/Japan trip. I first looked into South Africa, but the World Cup made it a very expensive destination. Then my brother suggested Peru because he wanted to go see Machu Picchu, one of the seven wonders. To be honest, I had never heard of Machu Picchu before, and I had never considered going to South America because I thought it was still too close to home. After browsing through a few sites, I decided to go with a half volunteer half tour trip with i-to-i.

Today I finally finished my first full week of work in Cusco, Peru. To my surprise, our volunteer work was not as tedious and routinely as I thought. Each day at Awana Kancha, we learned to do something new. It was basically one big process, and each day was one step. Day 1: took care of the llamas and alpacas. Day 2: sheered an alpaca and spun the wool into thread. Day 3: picked plants to make the dye. Day 4: spun the thread again to make it stronger. Day 5: weaved the bracelets.

What did I gain from this? The indigenous communities in Peru have such extraordinary skills and pride over their textile. We, the volunteers, only had a small glimpse of the entire process. The work is very time consuming, and it requires a great amount of patience and creativity and skills. I was just in awe by how swiftly the men and women did their work. The sad part is they get so little for the things that they make with such pride and joy. We were not there long enough to actually help with the labor work. However, what we learned at Awana Kancha, we can help promote their textile industry by telling others what really goes into each and every blankets, scarfs, purses, gloves, etc.

Overall the camel conservation project was just a right mix of work and fun. Now, the real tour begins tomorrow as we prepare for Machu Picchu!

Early this morning, we took a public van with Diego to the camel farm known as Awana Kancha. The driver was pretty loco. We were doing too fast too furious on a winding, narrow road up the mountains, passing up on the large trucks. When we arrived, we had an hour tour with Luis. Basically, our job is to feed the llamas and the alpacas, scoop up their poop, and learn to weave. We work Monday to Friday from 9AM to 12PM. The rest of the day is ours.

After work today, we went to the Plaza de Armas for the first time. It was perfect timing because we happened to be there for the parade of Saint Don Brosca (the children festival?). It was so cute watching the little children in colorful costumes marched down the streets. I also went to my first Irish pub and (legally) ordered a Malibu with pinapple juice (only because we couldn´t get a Pisco Sour). Overall, our first night out in Cusco was pretty awesome.

I have just arrived in Cuzco this morning after spending two days in the city of Lima. Our homestay in Cuzco is very modern and cozy with a huge lounge, free internet, and Western toilet (they do not use the word ¨restroom¨ because they take it literally here as a room to rest) and shower. Before coming here, we were warned about soroche (altitude sickness) because Cuzco is approximately 3,000 meters above sea level. Amy and I couldn´t tell whether we were suffering from soroche or just tired from the lack of sleep when we landed. The tradition here is to drink coca tea to cure soroche. As the name implies, this is probably the closely thing to cocaine that I will ever try. It actually tastes like any other tea.

Then we met up with Manuel and his little brother Freddie for ice cream at Gunther's. Today's beautiful weather called for a stroll in the park, so Andrew and I took advantage of it. Later in the evening, we went to my "farewell" dinner at Thai Chili. Thank you Connie for planning the event. It was nice seeing everyone again before my trip :).

I met up with Sim and Matt this morning at Tapioca Express. We talked for hours about the things we did in high school. Sadly our group has scattered to the point where I only see them individually. I talked to Michelle at the bus stop; I caught up with Julianne on the way home from Davis; I hung out with Sharisse at her party; I chatted with Andrew Vu on AIM; I messaged Andrew Le on Facebook. Back when I was a junior, the group was consisted of about 12 friends. We did almost everything together. Meeting up at Michelle's house, playing games at Andersen's, going to places in Sharisse's car, etc. It is not the same, but meeting up like this is good enough.

Sure we are not kids from the Bay or L.A. or New York, but we manage to find something that makes living in the Grove more enjoyable. For instance, dinner at Costco is both delicious, cheap, and fulfilling. Sitting and standing around in someone's garage calls for some deep conversations and good laughs.

Map The Soul World Tour in San Francisco was absolutely AMAZING! Definitely THE best concert I've been to so far. Michelle, Cassandra, and I were screaming like fan girls lol.
